L'HISTOIRE DES POLITIQUES CONCURRENTIELLES COMME HISTOIRE ÉCONOMIQUE
Dans cet article on relie les événements importants de l'histoire de la législation antitrust aux USA à trois ensembles de phénomènes économiques sous-jacents: (1) La forme et la vitesse du changement technique et de la répartition depuis un siècle; (2) D'importantes transformations institutionnelles concernant, en particulier, les relations de propriété, l'organisation interne des entreprises, les intermédiaires financiers et la politique économique; (3) Les relations de classe et de pouvoir, en entendant par là l'influence économique et politique de différents groupes dans la société.
La thèse soutenue dans ce travail est que ces trois aspects de l'histoire économique peut fournir une base à l'explication de l'évolution de la concurrence aux USA.
La première partie de cet article résume rapidement les éléments essentiels des transformation de l'économie américaine depuis la guerre de Sécession. Ensuite, on décrit, dans un seconde partie, comment l'histoire économique peut permettre d'expliquer certains faits centraux de l'histoire de la politique antitrust.
THE HISTORY OF COMPETITION POLICY AS ECONOMIC HISTORY
In this article we will connect important events in the history of antitrust law to three specific sets of underlying economic phenomena: (1) The pattern and evolution of technological change and distribution over the last century; (2) Important institutional transformations in property relations, internal firms organization, financial intermediaries and government economic policy; (3) Power and class relationships, meaning the economic and political influence of various groups in society.
The originating thesis of this article is that these three aspects of economic history can provide a basic foundation for explainig the evolution of competition in the United States.
The first part of the article summarizes in broad fashion the essential elements of the transformation of the American economy during the period stretching from the end of the Civil War to the present. Then in the second part we describe how economic history helps explain some of the central events in the history of competition policy.
